The Baxter family built their first spinning mill on the site in 1822, thereby establishing a company that would become one of the world’s largest linen manufacturers. The mill buildings – easily identified on the skyline by the elegant bell tower modelled on the Santa Maria della Salute in Venice – remain an important architectural landmark and have now been carefully restored to welcome visitors to this inspirational city. Dundee – the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design and home to the brand new V&A Museum of Design Dundee opening in 2018 – has been a focal point for creativity, design and innovation for many years.
